The Magic Bookshop

Design for a children’s book by Alan Rusbridger

Created as a finished book over a decade after the original story was written, The Magic Bookshop tells the story of Peter Puddle and his bookshop in Polkington. Doomed to close after a supermarket moves into the town, he hatches a plan to save his shop—and like all good plans, it involves magic. But magic has a habit of going wrong…

This project was a collaboration with Alan Rusbridger, former Guardian editor, and Ukrainian illustrator Oksana Volkovska to bring to life a story featuring a broad cast of fairy tale favourites.

Alongside managing the overall production process and the selection of a printer, the project also required the creation of the book’s layout grid, the selection of type and the typesetting of the story itself.

Altform, a contemporary sans serif typeface from London-based type foundry CoType, was selected as the typeface for the book due to its clarity and legibility—important characteristics that enable the book to be accessible to children of all ages.
